Speed Wash Laundry – “the fastest wash in the west” – is sandwiched between a discount clothing store and Cardenas Market in Riverside, Calif. In full view of the laundry's entry sit two large-capacity Continental PowerLoad Washer-Extractors used for washing family-sized loads of laundry, blankets, comforters and rugs. No competitor has the big machines, according to owner Doug Baron. “Last Sunday, we turned them a total of 20 times,” he says.
“I wanted the Mercedes of laundries,” Baron says. As a result, the number of toploads was limited, and mostly Energy Star-rated Continental front-load washers – the laundry's most profitable washers – were installed.
